Now Hiring! Hiring Is Broken, Healthcare Is Bouncing Back, and India Is All-In on AI.
Aug. 20, 2026

Hi there,
Employers can't fill open roles, the hiring process itself is getting in the way, and healthcare staffing is quietly turning a corner. Meanwhile, India just made AI skilling a national priority.
Here's what you need to know this week.
📋 Hiring Is Taking Longer — and More Roles Are Going Unfilled
44% of US employers report open positions they can't fill — the highest level since fall 2023 — and 1 in 5 open roles is closing without a hire at all, according to a new Express Employment-Harris Poll survey.
💻 IT Jobs Are Inching Up, But Employers Are Picky
IT employment edged up in July to 5.2 million — adding 1,757 jobs — but demand varies sharply by sector and geography as companies invest selectively in AI, cloud, and cybersecurity, per TechServe Alliance.
🏥 Healthcare Staffing Is Growing Again
All four healthcare staffing segments posted positive year-over-year revenue growth in June — allied health led at 4%, followed by per diem nursing (3%), locum tenens (2%), and travel nursing (1%), per SIA's latest Pulse Survey.
🤖 Hospitals Are Using AI to Fix Their Scheduling Problem
AI scheduling systems that analyze patient appointments, shift lengths, and bed availability are helping hospitals staff more efficiently — with Boston Children's and OpenAI already reporting measurable gains in OR utilization and scheduling lead times.
🇮🇳 India Just Made AI Skilling a National Priority
PM Modi announced AI skills training for 10 million youth in the next year as part of India's Independence Day address, positioning the country as a global innovation hub across AI, quantum computing, and 6G.
🔢 By the Numbers
19.32%. The share of India's $98 billion GCC sector value at risk by 2030 if AI and domain skill gaps go unaddressed — with new hires currently taking an average of 8.69 months to become productive, says a PwC India-FICCI report.
